Jtotik San Antrex y la identidad cultural de San Andrés Larrainzar: Estudio de los mitos de fundación y la persistencia de los héroes culturales mayas frente a la figura del santo occidental

Abstract

La tesis “Jtotik San Antréx y la identidad cultural de San Andrés Larráinzar: estudio de los mitos de fundación y la persistencia de los héroes culturales mayas frente a la figura del santo occidental”, de Manuel de Jesús Chanona Pascasio, analiza cómo los pueblos mayas reinterpretaron las figuras cristianas impuestas durante la evangelización, transformándolas en expresiones de resistencia cultural. El autor demuestra que la veneración de San Andrés en Larráinzar no puede entenderse como un simple sincretismo religioso, sino como una reconfiguración simbólica que conserva los fundamentos de la cosmovisión maya. A través del análisis histórico, teológico y mitológico, plantea que Jtotik San Antréx no es un santo occidental adaptado, sino un héroe cultural mesoamericano que encarna funciones sagradas propias de los antiguos ajaw: mediador entre lo humano y lo divino, protector de la comunidad y figura fundadora del orden social. La investigación combina fuentes históricas, hagiográficas y orales para mostrar cómo la figura de San Andrés fue impuesta nominalmente, pero resignificada en clave indígena. Así, el nombre cristiano se mantuvo, mientras su esencia fue reinterpretada según los mitos de fundación mayas. En conjunto, el estudio propone una lectura crítica del concepto de sincretismo y evidencia la persistencia de la identidad cultural maya a través de la apropiación y resignificación de símbolos coloniales. Con ello, aporta una visión renovadora al estudio de los mitos, la religión y la memoria en Chiapas y Mesoamérica. The thesis “Jtotik San Antréx and the Cultural Identity of San Andrés Larráinzar: Study of the Founding Myths and the Persistence of Mayan Cultural Heroes in Relation to the Figure of the Western Saint,” by Manuel de Jesús Chanona Pascasio, analyzes how the Mayan peoples reinterpreted the Christian figures imposed during evangelization, transforming them into expressions of cultural resistance. The author demonstrates that the veneration of San Andrés in Larráinzar cannot be understood as mere religious syncretism, but rather as a symbolic reconfiguration that preserves the foundations of the Mayan worldview. Through historical, theological, and mythological analysis, he proposes that Jtotik San Antréx is not an adapted Western saint, but a Mesoamerican cultural hero who embodies sacred functions characteristic of the ancient ajaw: mediator between the human and the divine, protector of the community, and founding figure of social order. The research combines historical and hagiographic sources and oral ones to show how the figure of Saint Andrew was nominally imposed, but reinterpreted in an indigenous key. Thus, the Christian name was maintained, while its essence was reinterpreted according to the Mayan founding myths. Overall, the study proposes a critical reading of the concept of syncretism and demonstrates the persistence of Mayan cultural identity through the appropriation and reinterpretation of colonial symbols. In this way, it offers a refreshing perspective on the study of myths, religion, and memory in Chiapas and Mesoamerica.
